Is Biscom/Faxcom the only faxing solution that integrates with cEMR? We've had them for years and I'd say we still have around 20% error rate when sending/receiving faxes. I talk to their support a few times a year and we're never able to find a reliable fix for these issues.
We have developed a faxing solution for an encounter called HybridFax, able to include any prior documents and attachments. Faxing is triggered by signing the document and in thus entirely transparent to the user and organization. Please contact me directly.
I saw you post that in a previous post. When I google Hybrid fax, the first result is "Hybrid Fax Solution - Biscom Cloud Fax" which doesn't sound like an alternative to Biscom.
Contact me and I will set up a WebEx. Our product is not "Hybrid Fax Solution - Biscom Cloud Fax".
We have been using Biscom for many years and I do not have a lot of issues. For the most part I have found that the issues are with the recipients (Send only) in rural areas. I use the 2 port Brooktrout fax board with copper phone company lines. I dropped down to the "oldest school" method as we are talking about 19th Century technology here.
Bottom line is that you will have issues with some of the old fax machines you connect to. I stay away from any hybrid/cloud/t.38 stuff. Until everyone else upgrades on their end there really is no point; I had too many headaches trying to make the newer technology work with the old equipment on the other end of the calls. Some of these doctors are retiring in the next 5 years so they don't want to buy a $99 fax machine now. 🙂
Check your infrastructure check for problems there whether you stay with Biscom or go with something else. I do like the integration which Biscom brings to the table. It is sad that we just can't seem to get away from faxing, because it is certainly a headache. We do utilize a HIE which is basically "outsourced faxing" for offices without new technology. I wish I could send everything there and get rid of fax hardware.
For inbound we use fax-to-email internally. It is a free benefit of our VOIP phone system called IAXmodem. I have converted every inbound fax to email (paperless) and I have never looked back.

Thanks Mike, I totally agree, it would be amazing to get rid of faxing in favor of a more reliable solution. We've swapped to fiber lines and swapped some of our other existing infrastructure that supports it but still not much of an improvement. Like you said, our problem is generally with outbound faxes to certain businesses that I can assume have a low tech faxing solution. We've actually had times with very few issues and other times where the percentage of errors seems extreme. Luckily, the Biscom solution is smart enough to detect some issues and retry until it believes that the fax made it through. It's not uncommon for us to see '0000' status messages saying that it was successfully sent, however when we call the receiving company, they get nothing or a small part of the original fax.
I worked for Cerner for 3 years and newer iterations of our faxing (RRD) solution had significant problems as well. A number of my clients at the time had to revert back to the old solutions because of these issues.
We use a combination of Biscom with a 4 port brooktrout card connected to Analog ports on our phone system (through a PRI, not VOIP) as well as Rightfax. Rightfax handles all of our inbound faxes as well as a large percentage of outbound. Our Rightfax machine has a PRI connected directly to a brooktrout card. It works inside of EMR because it has a print to fax driver you can use. It does not add any documentation to EMR like biscom does.
