We've discovered that the ability to save printer preferences is broken in CPS 12. If you change a printer inside the Chart to something different than the default, it will hold for the remainder of your session for actual printing, but if you go back into the printer preferences, it appears like you never made the change and I believe if you click Okay, it will set the defaults back as well.
Also, upon exiting and re-opening the application, your printer preferences from the previous session are gone.
So best bet for now is to plan on setting up your printers in the Chart at the beginning of every session and then not look at them again until the next session.
I spoke with GE Support and they confirmed that the issue number is CISDB00058137 and that it should be fixed in 12.1. He said that is most likely only a few weeks away although that does not jive with the August timeline we heard at CHUG.
Hopefully this will save a few people from banging their heads against the wall (anymore than you already do because you are a Centricity customer).
Are you hosted?
We do the hosting ourselves, but the behavior occurs in both the fat client and within an RDP session. We do have "UseClientName=TRUE" set in the EMR.ini on the terminal servers if that's where your thoughts were going. 🙂 If you have another idea, I'd be glad to hear it though.
That is exactly what I wanted to know. We are doing our first of 10 upgrades this weekend and tested it within the testing database and confirmed this as well. I am glad you posted this! Thank you and I hope for a swift resolution.
Heard the same thing and having the same issues here.
It's a "known issue" at GE, but they couldn't give me an SPR number for it.
I didn't know you can save printer setting using remote desktop services due to the printer redirection. Unless printer redirection is not in use.
Two things are involved in making it work as good as possible. There's another thread on here where myself and someone else were discussing how the implementation of printer preferences saving is still half baked on GE's part (it saves per user, but it really needs to be per user per device if I remember the gist of it), but if you can do the two things below, your users will be happier - at least once they have this bug in 12 fixed.
1.) In the EMR.INI on your terminal servers, set UseClientName=TRUE
2.) Make the printer names stay the same for each user at each login. I am not sure if this is even possible with straight RDP, but I think you can do it with Citrix. We use 2X printer redirection and it will make the name something like "printername for username by 2X." It doesn't have the session number (which will change constantly) baked into the name of the printer so whatever Centricity stores will still be valid the next time the user logs in and gets a different session number.
Hopefully this is helpful.
for some reason i can't get useclientname=true to work. It still shows the remote desktop server name. i use remoteapp.
also do you mind sharing the cost for 2X printer redirection?
Thanks.
Here is a link to the 2X pricing list - ApplicationServer XG is what we have - $75 per concurrent user basically to start and then about 20% of that for ongoing maintenance/upgrades per year. It's essentially a poor man's Citrix replacement so it does the connection brokering, universal printing, load balancing, etc. I won't lie - if money was no object, we'd probably use Citrix, but this makes things easier than just straight up RDP.

You also might be able to use something like ThinPrint (Cortado is the company) to allow the printer names to stay the same across different sessions for a particular user. I searched and tried to see if there was a way to do it with just RDP and it's something that people have been asking for since like 2005, but MS hasn't implemented it to my knowledge.
We just upgrade to cps12 and the printing setting is messed up. I set the printer setting in the beginning of the session. P1 for handouts, P2 for prescriptions, and P3 for all other documents. Once i print a prescrition, it changes the printer setting for all other document to P2. This is crazy.
