Anyone have any new information on SP5 for CPS 12? I thought it was supposed to have a release date of 8.25 last I saw?
I was wondering the same thing. Last week came and went and nothing.
We're dealing with a ton of crashes in CPS 12.0.3 at random places, not really reproducible at will, but more than enough to be annoying. The crashlogs in the user appdata directory indicate an access violation caused by one of the Centricity processes (cpopm06.exe, mlcore, etc).
I opened a case, provided five seperate crashlogs across different users, terminal servers, etc and the response was to ask if I was rebooting the terminal servers nightly and the db/app servers monthly.
I doubt they even bothered to look at the logs I sent. Why do that when you can just blame Windows or the customer's hardware/network and pretend it's 1991?
Hoping SP5 addresses some of the issues. On that "Top 10 SPR" list, #1 on the list is "use of flags causing instability." We certainly use flags. Seems like the SPR could mean almost anything. Anyone know anything about this issue?
We applied SP4 and was at least able to stop the majority of our UIRefresh crash issues but we are still crashing with the other 5 "known issues" about 15 times a day on average across our NPs. SP5 was supposed to resolve 3 additional "stability" issues from what I was told, but have not heard anything on a release date or even if it has been released to early adopters and testers yet.
... Another day without SP5. Another day with a large number of crashes, glitches and undocumented features...
Any further information on SP5? Where did you see the release date of 8/25??
The release date of 8/25 (or at least week of 8/25) came from the webex about service packs and patches. I believe the slides are available on the http://engage.gehealthcare.com site.
Thanks - must have missed that one 🙂
The one I saw was the follow-up "letter" sent out on the 26th about the "State of the Union address" in which they announced that 12.1 had been pushed to October now. I have included the "letter" below.
August 22,
2014
Dear
Centricity™ Practice Solution and Centricity EMR Customers:
Since our
most recent State of the Union, we have made important progress related to
Centricity Practice Solution (CPS), Centricity EMR (CEMR), and Clinical Quality
Reporting (CQR). We also have some follow up information from the call
that may be helpful as you plan your upgrade and prepare to attest to
Meaningful Use.
CPS
and CEMR -- Path to Meaningful Use
In response
to customer feedback and to simplify your preparations to attest to Meaningful
Use for 2014, we are updating our upgrade strategy recommendation. All
customers planning to upgrade in 2014 should plan to use either CPS12.0 or CEMR
9.8, each with SP4 or higher. The known stability of SP4 and relative ease of
adding additional service packs will simplify our collective efforts. We
anticipate including key features of the planned CPS 12.1 and CEMR 9.9 releases
in the post SP4 service packs, including CVS Improvements, Problem Search
Improvements and support for additional CQMs. Our services teams are
available to help you with your upgrades or any issue you may encounter in
applying service packs.
Development
on CPS 12.1 and CEMR 9.9 will continue, and these versions will be released
after October 1, 2014 (the start of the last available Meaningful Use reporting
period). We will continue to update you on the plans for these releases, and
they will be certified for Meaningful Use attestation.

Additional
service packs, to be released every 4 weeks, will contain fixes for the most
impactful SPRs. You can find the top 10 SPRs on the service portal
under "Access Documentation". Work to finalize which SPRs will be
included in SP6 is underway and will be communicated once finalized.
As a
reminder, in May the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services and the Office
of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology (ONC) issued a
proposed rule to delay when some customers must fully implement 2014 edition
certified technology and/or meet Stage 2 Meaningful Use measures in order to
successfully attest to Meaningful Use in 2014. We expect this proposed rule to
be finalized within a matter of weeks, with at least the specific level of
flexibility proposed, and will communicate further on the implications of the
rule as adopted.
If you
haven't yet upgraded to CPS12 or CEMR 9.8, per my letter of May 27, 2014,
please ensure that before you do so, you have run your Crystal Reports and
identified what steps you can take in the third or fourth quarter of 2014 to
meet the requirements of Stage 1 Meaningful Use as provided for by the proposed
rule. These actions may include documenting the percentage-based measures that
Crystal Reports can track and critically, the non-percentage-based measures that must
be met during a reporting period, such as use of clinical decision support and
the HIPAA security assessment.
Finally, at
our recent state of the union, we committed to provide important follow up
information. As such, please log in to the service portal at http://www.gehealthcare.com/se.....viceportal ,
select Centricity Practice Solution or Centricity EMR, and click on the
"View Past Webinars" link to access the call recordings and the
slides. In addition, click here to access the document entitled "CQR and Upgrade
Readiness FAQ" which contains answers to frequently asked questions from
this series.
Many of the
individually asked questions will be directly replied to via email this week.
Please plan to join us for our next live update on September 11, 2014 at
12:30PM EDT for CPS customers and 2:30PM EDT for CEMR customers. Invitations
will be posted to the service portal next week.
This is a
time of unprecedented industry change, and you have our commitment that we are
responding with unprecedented action to support you as you prepare for
Meaningful Use attestation.
Sincerely,
Peter Kinhan,
Vice President and General Manager,
Ambulatory Practice Solutions

This is awful for anyone with a large number of fat clients.

I agree. Hopefully they will come out with a client auto updater like most popular programs have now days. Even our Lab Information System has a client auto updater. They only have 8 machines to update. With EMR we have over 50 computers to update with a limited amount of staff to assist.
On that note, is anyone using any application deployment tools such as Zenworks, SCCM, or SolarWinds Patch Manager? How does this work for you?
Thanks,
Jake
At the last CHUG, they made a big deal talking about "serviceability" meaning - the service pack install process would be changed/improved to make it easier to do these more frequent updates.
So far, I haven't seen anything come to fruition with that.
I want frequent service packs in order to address stability issues, but from an administrative burden standpoint, I'd prefer them less often.
I agree the fat client is the worst part - mainly in that 1) you have to uninstall the old client before installing the new one and 2) it isn't just a standard MSI and I have to extract the setup.exe from the cab file, make a frankenscript , record an iss file, etc to get the thing to roll out in some sort of automated fashion. Now that I've done it a few times, I can usually get it working without too much trouble, but following standard Windows install conventions would be great. Not every customer is 5 PCs on a LAN in one location.
Another terrible thing about the service packs is how the website is clobbered and I am left having to re-install third party things like document management integration, patient portal integration, billing plugins, etc. Why don't they just update the files that need to change and leave the rest intact?

Ugh. We have nearly 200 fat clients spread over 300 miles across the practice, and it takes an entire weekend to update them all. This causes us $$ in OT costs, exhausted IT folk, and the provider on call over the weekend hates us. Plus, all the providers who use the weekend to catch up on their billing get even further behind. I hope they figure out how to update without uninstalling the client from each machine soon.

Yuck. We used to have over a hundred, but converting as many as we can over to terminal servers or linked clones with VMWare VDI to reduce my update times. Also now that Dragon Medical 12.5 (or DME2) works with MS Terminal Servers (without having to license Citrix), we may be able to convert a few more fat clients.
Jake
Our front desk computers have to be fat clients for Patient Link, all the providers and execs have laptops so they can work from home, and most of our admin staff has fat clients too. Just convincing them to leave their computers at work and connected to the network over the weekend so we can update them is a headache in itself.
We were fortunate to be able to require everyone to use RDP for remote access. Using an SSL cert and MS Terminal Services Gateway. But our managers all have virtual desktops, they just need an RDP link emailed to them to connect from any current Windows computer. Also Macs support MS TS gateway now from an app in the app store.
The providers have laptops with the client installed, but have to use RDP from outside.
We also have issues with providers taking their computers home during an update, so they use the terminal servers following the upgrade and schedule with IT a time to install the fat client. Some just use the terminal servers now as it's generally snappier for them.
