Is it possible to change the name and/or description of an ICD-10 code? Our providers disagree with the language of one of the diagnoses and wants to alter it. Looking ahead to 2020, it doesn't look like this one is set to change anytime soon, so we'd like to update it ourselves.

Yes this can be done with an UPDATE statement with a SQL script, using MS SQL Server Studio.

I figured we could force it, but our concern was that forcing a change to official language could have some unintended consequences. Do you know if there is anything, billing or legalwise, that we need to be careful of?

I can’t say for sure, as I was never been inquired to make any changes to the IDC-10 description. I only replied, based on database management and abilities to make changes diagnostics table.
Insurance companies, if I believe, only go after CPT codes and ICD-10 codes... the way of just ‘coding’ is how they deal with claims...
