We use a fair number of compounded topical creams to treat our chronic pain patients. I have been able to add them to our custom list to make prescribing for our providers easier but I have had to add them as an uncoded medicaton and so can not e-prescribe them. Does anyone have any way that they have figured out to get around this so we can e-prescribe these meds?
Thanks for any help
Terry
Usually the single ingrediants are coded medications so I choose one, so for Magic Mouthwash say. I choose Viscous Lidocaine 2% from the reference list, and then in the sig I write mix with equal parts Maalox and Diphenhydramine elixir 12.5mg/5ml. To make 120ml total. This allows it to be eprescribed.

I was told by GE Integrated Services (Brian Balloon and Co.) that compounded medications cannot be sent electronically. Yes, you can enter single ingredients, but we had gotten pushback from some of our pharmacies having the rest of the ingredients in the instructions...I have a similar issue trying to include pain pump medications combos to custom lists. How do you add an uncoded medication to a custom list? I have been unable to do so. We are on 9.8 SP10 EMR.

Wendy,
In a test patient, I go to the find medication prescribing screen and choose the custom list that I want to add it to. Type into the medication name space what I want to call the medication. Choose a route, for us usually transdermal. Then I type into the instructions area the combo that I want as well as the directions for application. I add quantity and refills and then choose the prescribing method as historical. I check all 3 boxes under add to custom list and say ok. I have created a custom list for all our compounded crams for our pain managment providers.
If you have further questions or need to get in contact with me please feel free to email me at [email protected]. I really wish they would allow us to e prescribe uncoded meds so I don't have to reinvent the wheel to work around the system. Using a coded med in the med name field was what i have doen in the past but it makes it more difficult for the providers to pick the correct med.
