Management has concerns centricity database is growing at an abnormally high rate 200 GB a year. Is this “normal”? We started out with CPS 9.5 and are now CPS 12. Did version upgrades bring growth due to additional tables / columns? IS there anything that can be done to stem the growth rate? Purge records etc.?
Can you provide some practice info?
We're on CPS 12. We started with PM 04, then went live on EMR with CPS 06 and continued to CPS 12 now. We have 12 providers in a cardio practice. Our database is currently 37GB. It isn't growing quickly at all.
I would point out that we did not choose to store our attachments in the database specifically to avoid the database bloat. There is no significant benefit to storing attachments in the database, but there are a number of drawbacks.
We have 100+ providers, 20k patients, 6 clinics. We do not have attachments in our database either.
YEs we are experiencing the same thing too. we have about 40+ provider. Our database has grown 4 times in size since cps 9 i believed. We don't use the attachments in our db either.
My mistake. I looked at the backup size. Our .mdf is 200GB and .ldf is 235GB. That seems high to me so I'll be checking into that myself now. 🙂
Ah. Our database recovery model is currently set to full. That explains the LDF. Also, we've set our db starting sizes in MSSQL to 200GB (MDF) and 235GB (LDF) for some reason. We're only using 37GB currently.
Our database started growing exponentially immediately after we upgraded to CPS 12. We are quite concerned. We have 11 providers, 3 mid-levels. We store our attachments on a completely different server. We used 50 GB in a period of 3 weeks. We thought we were set for quite some time but bright one morning last week no one could log in to Centricity because our database was full. We have virtual servers so our IT folks were able to reallocate space within minutes but we are now keeping a very close eye on our growth.
50GB over a few weeks seems quite excessive. In SSMS right click on the Centricity database, go to Reports > Standard Reports > Disk Usage by Top Tables. Perhaps one of the tables will stand out.
We see similar sizing on the Oracle platform. While not every day is the same, it averages to about 1GB per day growth over time. Much seems related to auditing, formularies and eligibility. Often see spikes once monthly on a Monday night (at 10GB), after monthly updates are in.
Thank you SLHV for the information on running a report. It was extremely helpful!
Lightweights...
Our database is over 850GB, yes, a smidgen away from a TERRA-BYTE.
GE has re-assured us it's fine. CPS 12 sp 7 works very efficient and there are no significant delays in any of our modules.
I have significant database issues, although we are hosted with GE and use EMR 9.8. I am still trying to figure out how I get up to a dozen duplicates of pharmacies, professional contacts, etc. It takes me almost 20 minutes to update one pharmacy or try to merge contacts since all the erroneous ones are already associated with a patient, so I cannot remove them. I dread updating any pharmacy information.
