We need providers to be able to set the Place of Service flag at time of orders, to make sure that the correct place of service is being associated with each order/procedure.
Here is a short list of what we have investigated:
1. Use an existing OBS term, which could be used in the form.
Result: no OBS term exists for place of service.
2. Use a modifier, which can be defined to change a particular value for a special case (such as seeing someone outside the office.)
Result: modifiers can not be used to modify the place of service.
3. Create a separate procedure for procedures that are not done in-house
Result: We are not able to create multiple procedures for the same code.
We have NOT tried:
1. Delete the place of service from the procedure and train staff to fill in.
Issue: Too time consuming to be done for every procedure/order.
2. Request a new OBS term that will set the place of service
Issue: ordering OBS terms is difficult, and might not be appropriate for the time that we have left with CPS.
Current Workflow
This is how to change the Place of Service per CPS Help Documentation:
To modify the place of service
1. Go to Billing > Visit.
2. In the Charges tab, in the Procedure View List, select a procedure then click Modify. The Charge Entry window displays.
3. In the Charge 1 tab, next to the Place of Service option, click . The Select Place of Service window displays.
4. Select a place of service then click OK.
5. In the Visit window, click Save or Save & Close.
To modify the override for a place of service code
1. In Administration, go to Edit > Insurance Carriers. The Find Insurance Carrier window displays.
2. Click Search.
3. Select an insurance carrier then click Edit. The Edit Insurance Carrier window displays.
4. In the Service tab, select a place of service in the right column, then click Edit. The Edit Service Code window displays.
5. Enter a code in the Override Code field then click OK.
Is there anything we missed in connecting the processes?
Thank you.

Are your providers signing in at the correct location of care?
I am checking with a co-worker on that. By your question, do you mean default location on their login/user setup?
Thanks,
John
My co-worker indicated our providers are all logging into the same location of care. GE's documentation is unclear on how the lcoation of care relates to the place of service. Would an appoinment have to be created? We have very odd workflows and I want make sure aren't we causing our own prolems
What we have found is this:
Facilities in PM = Locations of care in the chart module -- we had to go into all of our locations of care and link them to the corresponding facility. You set the place of service on the facility in PM.
Once we brought up orders and started sending charges through orders to PM, if there is an appt booked, the the facility on the appt has to match the location of care on the document in the chart. If they don't match, then you will end up with duplicate tickets for the patient. This can be accomplished by either setting the location of care at the time of sign in or changing the location of care when you start the document.
On the login screen when the user enters their credentials, there should be a dropdown to indicate location of care.
For a procedure, there doesn't seem to be a field to put the allowable for each place of service. How do you handle facility vs non-facility allowables from medicare (or other payers) with this method?
