I have a provider that has her own Magic Mouthwash recipe and she wants to somehow automate it rather than writing it out every time. I asked her if it went to a compounding pharmacy and she replied
"No, it will go to any pharm. Its a recipe of common liquid ingredients and I haven't experienced a problem locally with pharmacies declining to mix it. I would like to be able to create it and save it so that I can just pick it like any other med next time."
Asked her if any of the "Magic Mouthwash" types listed in the EMR would work:
"Actually, no. Mine has diphenhydramine, viscous lidocaine, and mylanta or dexamethasone. The ones you listed appear to be various formulations for thrush and one that I don't really recognize."
Since this is uncoded, it can't be added to a custom list. Is there a way to "automate" writing this Rx? I don't think there is but thought I'd ask 🙂
Thanks,
David,
I think you could add this to the custom list but via an update while adding a new med. Enter all the medication details and use the add to custom list checkbox at the bottom of the new medication form.
I hope this works for you.
You can enter this and add to the custom list. I have done this for some pain compounds for our pain management clinic. You simply go into a blank update on a test patient. Go to add a new med, but instead of using the reference list, you will simply type the name of the Magic Mouthwash and then in the sig fill in the drugs included in the compound and directions for taking/using. Also make sure to choose whether it is drug vs non-drug on the drop down next to med name. Then fill in the quantity and any refills as needed and make sure that you have the providers custom list pulled up. Once this is filled in, check all the boxes to add to custom list in the lower right corner of the add med box and click ok. Sign your update and now you can edit this in the future from the admin side via that providers custom med list.
What we actually use for Magic Mouthwash (with a very similar recipe to hers) is choose the Viscous lidocaine as the med choice and in the directions put “diphenhydramine, viscous lidocaine, and mylanta equal parts each” then save this to the custom list. Our users can then just choose Lidocaine, Viscous from the list and Voila, eRx.
