Does anyone happen to know exactly what this is? and how does it work?
Thanks,
Judy
Judy,
This is what I understand after watching one of GE's webinars on CPS 12.3 and talking to pharma reps. Version 12.3 will offer a medication discount/couponing feature that is tied into e-prescribing via the new API (application programming interface). You configure a URL (website address) in the system configuration to check for these discounts. I have not seen a demo, but what I anticipate is that once you prescribe a medication, the URL address will be checked to see if that particular medication has any associated discounts. If it does, the provider will be alerted of the discount/coupon within Centricity prior to signing off on the prescription. Once the prescription is signed off, the discount/coupon will be "attached" to the message that goes to the pharmacy. I have had pharma reps bugging me about getting our EMR to do this for the past several months, and I would just look at them like they were on crack. In spite of their ability to describe the technical details behind this feature, it does appear to be a real thing. The website address (URL) GE displayed in their webinar contained GE's domain name, so I suspect they are simply checking Surescripts or some other source for these discount messages. Pharma companies are apparently already communicating with the central database that maintains information on the discounts, and I was told by one pharma rep that Practice Fusion (a web-based EMR) already has the ability to transmit these discounts/coupons to the pharmacy with the prescription.
I did some research and here is a link describing how this feature works in Practice Fusion. I suspect it will behave similarly in CPS.
How prescription coupons will work...(click me for details)
Cheers,
Greg
