We've had an increasing number of patients coming in who have a picture of their insurance card on their phones rather than bringing the actual card in. Some insurance companies are not sending patients the physical card anymore and tell them they can print them online as well.
What are other practices doing for these scenarios? We usually scan the insurance cards at every visit, but we cannot scan an insurance card on a patient's phone.
Thanks for any input!

Here is the response I received from our Patient Access Manager:
We transcribe the info off the card on their phone into Centricity and ask the patient to print it out before their next visit so we can scan in the copy that they bring. Some may prefer to mail a copy to us so we give them our physical address.
Here is a link to a PDF file from Aetna describing the move to digital insurance cards: http://www.aetna.com/healthcare-professionals/documents-forms/digital-member-id-cards.pdf
I suspect this will be a growing trend.
We've asked a few patients to upload the card copy to us via patient portal. That way we have an electronic copy we can add into the system.
If you have a camera or webcam at the front desk to take patient photos for the EMR you may be able to use that to take a picture of the virtual insurance card off the patient's phone. Not a perfect solution, but should capture all the information needed for billing and prior authorizations.
