Hello everyone,
Can someone please help me understand the purpose of "Order Sets" and how/where to use them?
How are they used in your clinic?
We use them at our clinic to group labs together for certain visits and then they don't have to look for each lab individually.
example we have a Set called : DSU9 and in that set are all 9 of the labs that are included in this order. So they would just select that one and all nine will be listed.
If you have any further questions please don't hesitate to contact me.

We too use order sets to group together things that must be ordered together. We also use order sets for some service orders to make sure all necessary codes are charged. For example:
Arthritis Panel - includes 5 tests
Club Foot Cast - set includes code for the cast and the fiberglass material
Visco Injection with U/S - this set includes the OV code, the medication code, & the injection code
Hope these examples help. Would be happy to discuss more if need be.

We use Order sets frequently in our clinics. Its an easy way to group sets of orders together that providers usually order for a specific diagnosis. Examples are Diabetes Order sets or hepatitis Order sets. It is easier and less time consuming for the provider to use these then to try and search for multiple orders on their own. They can either pick the entire order set or just a few orders from the set. We actually also use them as one of our Clinical Decision Support rules for Meaningful Use. The providers love them!!
Another example would be immunizations. The order set would include: whatever the immunization is (what is in the syringe), and the delivery by the nurse of the immunization shot. For insurance and billing, they are two separate things.
Thank you so much you guys. We don't use order sets here but it is a great feature we can implement. So how do you guys choose the order set on the UI side? I don't see the list of order sets to choose from through the chart. I have set some up under administration I just don't see them for me to be able to actually use them.
Thank you!!
We use order sets for new patient labs by provider (we are a specialty clinic and order these by condition). In our environment labs are collected before the appointment. It is helpful because nurses that are cross-covering can go directly to that order set and enter them without having to ask someone or keep tabs with a paper list.
You have to set up the order set first and then add that order set to Orders Custom Lists. For example, I have separate order sets by disease state for a particular provider and then I have an Orders Custom List that is everything for that provider. Hope that helps.
I see it now. Thanks so much for your help!
I really appreciate it ! 🙂
As a family practice office we have a ton of order sets and for our office it is all about decreasing the amount of clicks for the providers:) These order sets really streamline the physician's ordering process if built correctly and used correctly. Could use for lab panels or vaccines at specific well visits that are normally given, or procedures that always include more than one code such as IUD's (Mirena insertion would need to be billed as two cpt codes using same dx code the cpt for insertion, and hcps for the device )
