Good morning,
We have been successfully sending lab orders electronically using our Summit interface engine for the past couple years. Our lab has requested that we pilot sending microbiology orders electronically as well.
Unfortunately, the orders module in C-EMR is pretty basic and microbiology orders are pretty complex. We need to capture source (sometimes multiple) and specimen on the order and the only place to insert the information is in the instructions box. This solution lends itself to lots of opportunity for user error.
I'm toying with the idea of creating a custom VFE form with locked dropdowns to generate the most commonly ordered tests, but hope there might be another solution that we just haven't thought of.
Are any other sites actively sending micro orders electronically from C-EMR? If so, how did you go about accomplishing it?
We are using EMR Link as our "connection" between the EMR and our LIS. We were able to set up AOE questions that prompt the office to specify the type of specimen as well as other types of information pertaining to the given test they are ordering. This information is then passed on to our LIS.

Currently, using a VFE form to format the instructions field is the better solution, however it can still be manually edited once in the orders module, which depending on the user, could be a blessing or curse. Also understand that there would be no 'change order' functionality meaning that if a manual edit workflow is required, forcing the orders to be signed before the form is closed may not be the best approach.
