Has anyone gotten medical records release requests from MotherKnows.com? I went to the site and it is a pay EHR site for parents to set up their kids records. It looks like the parent just gives MotherKnows.com the authorization to request medical records and the site takes the job of getting the records and putting them in their system.
I'm wondering if you get repeat requests at a certain time interval or are they expecting you to track these kids and send updated records every time they are seen?
Thanks Chuggers,

If I understand this correctly, MotherKnows.com offers three levels of service to patients:
- Lite version where the patient gets the info and enters it
- Version where the info is entered by MotherKnows quarterly
- Version where the info is updated monthly.
I think, based on what level the patient buys, then MotherKnows will ask the provider for monthly or quarterly updates.
I am amazed that this has not appeared before. While a few institutions do give access to the patient (MD Anderson and PlaneTree hospitals come to mind, but there are likely others), most of us keep the info, usually in proprietary formats, locked down. IMagine having to formally request information about your banking transactions or current balance, and then waiting 2 weeks or 4 weeks as a matter of policy before they give you the results?
IMO, pretty much all the commercial EHR systems depend on some degree of lock-in for business. Hospitals and providers also, though less so. So, as a business model, we (the medical profession) makes an effort to put barriers between patients and their records.
The AHA is currently attempting to change the regs to give hospitals 30 days after discharge before they are obligate to give patients a copy of the discharge information. Given the push to rapid transfer of info at discharge or transfer to prevent errors and re-admissions, the only possible reason is to prevent leakage to patients.
If GE has any sense, they are working very hard at this and we will hear very soon that we can give our patients access to their records.
