After sending an active patient to collections, is there any way to continue to bill the patient for any new charges without billing for the collection charges except for writing off the collection balances.
We write off as bad debt with an adjustment stating "OUT to collections." We then change the status from "Paid" back to "Bad Debt," so we can find the accounts easily. We also change the "insurance" to the name of the collection agency, who we have set up as an insurance. When a collection payment comes in, we reverse the adjustment (to put the money back on the account) stating "IN from collections." This way the accounts are always clean, but we can find the amounts at any time by looking up the collection agency ("insurance company") or by the status of "Bad Debt." This helps us also have a better idea of our actual A/R numbers without looking at longstanding collection accounts. If we want to add that in, we can utilize our collection agency reports for the totals.
