How many of you are using a Citrix environment to publish CEMR as an application and get help desk calls from users stating that "my default printers aren't sticking!" (In CEMR: Options > Select Printers. They're always reset.) I know I do!
I've submitted an enhancement request to GE with the following:
Printer defaults should be mapped via user, and not via workstations. This makes it very difficult for us when we are using the CEMR application via Citrix environment as opposed to local workstations. We have multiple Citrix servers set up with load balancing so users are connecting to a different server each time. Multiple providers and clinical users are finding it very frustrating that printers are not sticking.
I read a couple other posts out there that others are experiencing the same thing. If you agree with this enhancement request, I encourage you to PLEASE submit an enhancement request to GE Support as well. The more enhancement requests on this, the greater our chances are for this enhancement to be implemented.
Thanks,
Mike L.
This is a Citrix issue. We had this issue around 4 years ago. It is important for the user prior to starting a Citrix session to define their default printer. We found that creating local printers on the user machines improved performance.
If you are using printers correctly within CEMR (USECLIENTNAME=TRUE) it does not matter that the user is connecting from multiple Citrix servers. We have 16 citrix servers that our users connect to and once we learned to manage them correctly, we do not experience any issues.
Mapping printers to users would affect us negatively as we have doctors that travel from site to site and they use different computers at each site and of course different printers. Since they are on a different computer, (but same citrix environment) the local printer maps instead of the one they last set at the last location. Also the next user that picks up that laptop or loggs in to citrix from that PC will have the printers already set.
I think that printer management on Citrix within CEMR is very misunderstood. If you use redirected printers, you need to make sure that Citrix uses the old style naming convention for printers. It is also mandatory that you use the USECLIENTNAME=TRUE in Citrix. Doing so maps printers to the %CLIENTNAME% environment variable (the name of the PC you are connecting to Citrix from) instead of to your Citrix server. If you have these two things setup correctly, you should be able to connect from a PC to Citrix as any user, set the printers and from then on any user at that station should have their printers set.
