OBSNOW("GEST AGE EST") is generated in fraction format (i.e., 20 2/7). How can I get a MEL statement to recognize fractions and look at whether the value is less "8 0/7"?

I've tried to use fractions before (for using number of cigarette packs smoked per day) in a calculation. I found that it was easier to convert the fraction to a decimal and use that instead of keeping the fraction. When I tried to keep the fraction I kept running into MEL errors.
