Does anyone have some best practices workflows and CPS build to support future lab orders? We are seeing an issue where the orders is placed today, however, the patient does not get the blood drawn today and return in a couple days. We do not use EMR Link and we have no future plans to do so. I was hoping there is some creative build that will prevent a billing ticket or something.......
They should be completing the orders when the draw the specimen due to the transfer to visit indicator being set.. This is not happening. What we are finding is the staff is completing the order when it is resulted or in some cases not completing the order ever. All of this is contributing to a duplicate billing tickets.
We have a large multi-specialty clinic that was having the same issues. What we did was switch all the lab orders via code & category setting to admin hold status. When the provider orders the lab, they are supposed to put the estimated date that the patient will return for labs. If they don't, the nurse follows up with the patient upon discharge and revises the on hold order at that time. If both of those processes fail, then the order is still left in admin hold status and does not print. When the patient does return, the lab changes the date on the order & completes it when the blood is drawn. Some of what you have indicated is a matter of providing written workflows to the users and then holding them accountable for it, but some of it can be assisted by setting up the orders module so the tickets don't auto-print.
We are on EMR but I hope this can help in some way.
