Hello All,
We recently had the introduction of medical marijuana in PA. We are trying to work out how to best document it in the EMR. Currently we have a place to note use in our risk factors form, however, that really pertains to recreational use. We took a quick look and didn't find an option to add it in the medication list, but we could of course add it as an uncoded option. Since other states have had this for a while we figured there must be a workflow. How do you document medical use of marijuana?

We have been doing it as an unlisted/uncoded medication. In exploring we didn't find any other better options than this.

I talked with our VAR about this the other day, and the reply I received was the Federal Government still sees Marijuana as an illegal substances. Therefore, it will probably not be added to the SureScripts medication list. Our thoughts are just adding Cannabinoid to one custom medication list un-coded as a drug.
