Our practice is currently looking into the best plan for ICD 10 this October between using the Smart List, trying to build some custom lists, and looking at third party vendors. When looking at the ICD-10 codes currently in the system, it continuously returns unspecified codes. If I look up degenerative joint disease, right knee, the code shows it is for an unspecified laterality even when right knee was chosen. The distal radius fracture was mostly unspecified.
Is there something I am missing with finding the correct ICD 10 codes? How are the doctors supposed to drill down to the correct level of specificity required for ICD 10 so that the correct (or at least more accurate) code is attached to our Orders and then pushed into the Billing module?
Thanks in advance for any assistance and/or recommendations!

Bree,
Our clinic has the same issue and we've been discussing it with GE for a few weeks. GE is updating a synonym list to help as their first step, while they look to update the problem search as a second step. Since we are a specialty clinic, each department would probably key on their top ten problem search items. We asked that GE consider this and also make a "recent" list part of the problem search fix.
Right now, we reach the problem search window, go to our phones and use an online voice search for an accurate result, and enter that as a workaround. Alternative that we liked but haven't committed to yet is IMO Blackbird.
I believe GE mentioned the synonym update would be part of 12.0.8, but I haven't seen that anywhere to confirm. While we had hoped to remain stable without service pack updates for the near term, 12.0.8 is expected soon.

Don't know if this would be helpful but the ICD-10 database is online. http://www.icd10data.com/
