We recently added a LIS and new analyzer to our lab and are trying to plan the best workflows for ordering, resulting and billing. We currently run our analyzer 2 days per week and batch patient specimens accordingly. Our LIS will result back to the chart and create a service order to coincide with the date the blood was drawn. Our concern is that since we are batching labs, providers may sign notes and charges may be processed before the analysis is complete. These tickets from the office visits may not have the correct modifiers for lab services.
How do your labs order, result and bill for labs processed in house?
Thanks!

Short version as I'm in the gym.
1- ORM/ order out interface from GE to your LIS
2- DFT hl7 message back from LIS to CPS or the pm you are using.
3- setup LIS to only send the dft to centricity, when the results from the chemistry analyser are in the patient records within the LIS and has been released. This mean that you will have 2 hl7 coming out of your LIS,. 1st is going to be your actual LAB Results ( an ORU message) and 2nd, the (DFT, detailed financial Transaction) message.
Almost all commercial LIS support this 2 types of messages.
In case your LIS system fee are too high, you can use free qvera to transform the messages back and forward, a long as they don't go beyond 2000 hl7 a week.
Let me know if you have any question so I can be more detailed.
Used to have orchard harvest to do this for our LIS
Hi David!
Thank you for your response!
We have a LIS in place and interfaces in place for the orders out, results in, and billing in.
We are trying to learn the best workflow for making sure billing is completed appropriately.
Do you process labs the same day as they are ordered when ordered in an office visit? Or is there any time between the date of draw and the date of result?
Thanks!
Mady
We no longer have the inhouse lab.
but nope, we didn't process labs the same day, that is the reason why we have setup the LIS to send the billing HL7 when the result are released back into the LIS patient record, that is going to make sure that only after you get a lab result, you will get a billing charge about it!
What LIS system are you using if you can share that information?
We are using Medicus LIS.
Did you hold office visit charges so the lab charges could be added later with the correct modifiers?
Thanks!
