General question. How is your practice handling name changes? i.e-Someone gets married, do you update their current profile with their new last name, do you deacitvate the old, making a new, or do you leave them as the original name? I believe, although, I can't say for certain, that legally you have to be documenting with your legal name? Is this correct? Although, others within our group believe differently. Any thoughts or policies anyone has would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you,
Rebecca
When a patient notifies our clinic of a name change we will change it in our billing system and in our EMR.
However, for billing purposes the patient’s last name must match what the patient’s insurance has on file. We have an Insurance Card Name Override in our billing application that will allow us to override the last name. We can bill claims with the old last name and have the patient’s new legal last name appear in the demographics area. Once the patient’s last name is changed with insurance we can remove the override.
Hope this helps!

Thank you for the information!
I should have been more clear...this is for staff name changes.
Any thoughts?

Misti,
We are running into the issue that you describe above - the patient's legal name, listed in our Registration and EMR, is different than the name on the insurance card. Is your Insurance Card Name Override a GE function or is this a plug-in that you've purchased from an outside source?

We are using active directory for our logins, and for our staff (60 women, I am the only male), when one of them gets married, I just update their last name and leave the login the same. We use first initial last name as a login and since most have been using it for years already it just makes more sense to keep it the same but change the display name.
Thank you Chris.
