I am wondering how others are handling this situation.
How do you ensure confidentiality of patient summaries and reports for minor patients when using the patient portal? For example, if a pediatric patient had an STD how do you ensure that the parent does not get the information, either the notes or labs?
Thanks.
Which portal are you using? If it is the surescripts portal you may need to decide whether or not you will allow minor access on the portal. Since the diagnosis/problem list (which would show the STD) and the medication list (which could show birth control, etc) display in the chart summary, then many places have decided to turn off the portal to minors ages 12-17.
As far as I know today, there is no way to suppress that sensitive information while still allowing parental access. Someone please correct me if that is not true. I can not speak of the other portals.
Thanks for the reply. We are using ezAccess.
