Curious to see if anyone is or has tried the paleo diet? Recently had a doc suggest it due to some family members having gluten and diary issues.
I just started it recently, and am trying to move my whole family toward that type of eating. I'm not completely Paleo yet, but mostly. I have a few friends who follow the eating style as well. There are a ton of resources that I've found that are great! If you want more info, you can e-mail me directly. [email protected]
A "paleo" (hunter-gatherer) diet can certainly be a healthy diet, primarily due to the fact that it is a low carb diet and for the most part, excludes foods that are common food allergens. It's also rich in fiber and antioxidants.
If you think that you have a "gluten problem" remember that there is a very specific autoimmune condition, celiac disease, that is treated with a "gluten-free" diet. It is inappropriate, and potentially harmful for patients who have celiac disease to just "try out" a gluten restricted diet. You should see a doctor and attempt to make a diagnosis (or rule it out). The stakes are much higher.
The GFCF (gluten free casein free) diet has been recommended for patients with autism and various psychiatric disorders (including a folk illness referred to as 'brain fog'). The actual scientific evidence for this is lacking; in fact there have been 2 separate Cochrane reviews of this with no recommendation other than "more studies should be done".
Some of these people may have a condition called "non-celiac gluten intolerance" that is getting some science behind it. Basically it's folks who are negative for a proper celiac disease evaluation but who experience significant improvement in a variety of symptoms on a gluten free diet.
There are fad diets and there are diets that serve as specific medical nutrition therapy. GFCF and paleo are fad diets that actually make some nutritional sense. My advice is just to be sure which you are following.
I've been pretty strict Paleo for about 2 years now and have lost 40 lbs. I've been talking this lifestyle up for some time now and have been successful getting others I work with to try it.
I guess you can kinda say Paleo is a fad in the sense that we cannot recreate our ancesters diet 100%, but it truly is a lifestyle change that has millions of years of evidence to back it up. It's only the last 10,000 or so years that we've moved away from that healthy lifestyle.
If it gets you to move away from refined sugars and needless carbs, you'll be all the more healthy.
I am actually thinking of starting this diet myself. One of our primary care providers recommends it as well. She went on it before she had back surgery and recommends it for any patient who has difficulty with carb cravings (like me). I have a couple different resources I am looking at and have bookmarked Mark's Daily Apple, a very informative Paleo website. There is a lot of information out there. I have a bunch of blanched almonds to make some almond meal for some bread

Actually, http://www.marksdailyapple.com is more primal than paleo...which is more my speed. I wouldn't be able to give up the dairy!
