I'm currently in the process of converting all of our patient forms into eForms on the Sure Scripts portal but our portal adoption rates are still pretty low. I was wanting to hear from other people what strategies they might be using to help drive people to the portal and increase use. Thanks!
We send patients copies of their LAB/Radiology results to the portal if we have an email address for them (regardless if they are signed up to the portal). Even if they are not signed up, they will get an email telling them they have a message and need to sign up. We do not provide lab results via emai/fax/phone so if they want them the must use the portal.
We direct them to go to the portal for refill requests, medical records requests, etc.
After a visit ACM creates a CVS and sends it to their portal account if they have one so they end up with an email telling them they have a new message waiting.
We also require that check in/out staff provide the patients with PIN's if they do not already have one. We run audit reports to find the percentage of all arrived patients from previous dates who do not have a PIN and re-train employees with low percentages.
I am sure we have a couple of other tricks but this was all I could think of off the top of my head.
All great ideas. Thanks!
I do portal optimizations if you are interested in an assessment. I can take a look at what you have and prepare a report with ideas of how to increase integration and usability.

We are actually planning on moving away from the Surescripts Patient Portal and going with Medfusion's Patient Portal. Medfusion has a much more patient friendly portal.
If you are looking to get credit for the View/Download/Transmit measure, patients must go to the "Chart Summary" tab. Logging into the portal and viewing a secure message is not enough. Even though we get a secure message out to 90% of our patients every month, we were down below 10% for this measure.
We just made a change that makes "Chart Summary" the default page in the email link when a patient is sent a secure message. The top of the "Chart Summary" page has a message with a link that tells them how to get to their secure messages.
We also put a very prominent box at the top of the portal home page with a link to their chart summary.
We're not really too concerned about our numbers for V/D/T. We're just looking to increase the number of new patients we have utilizing our portal to fill out health history forms prior to their appointment. Thanks!
People will use portals that engage them.
In a clinic environment, that means when they need or want something. What do you offer them besides labs and appointments?
By offering consistent and constant updates to content, you'll have better adoption and eyeballs.
Good Luck.
