Who has enabled the ability for patients to send attachments to providers through the portal? If you have, do you have any type of policy associated with the process? Do you have any disclaimer the patient has to acknowledge before they can proceed.
Thank you in advance,
Dawn
We recently did. We don't have very many people using it though. It does help when a parent has a question and can send a photo. We did not post any specific disclaimer. However, our enrollment process does indicate that we reserve the right to discontinue portal access at any time. If anyone abuses the privilege, we can turn off their account privileges.
We only allow text. No attachments.
To Bovie,
Is there a specific reason you don't allow the attachments?
Mostly security reasons. We don't want anything coming in with a virus.
I have it globally blocked but with a per user ability to allow attachments. So if a user needs to have a patient send them something, they can enable the attachments.
We currently only allow text as well.
There are so many things to consider including security (virus's, malware, etc), file storage (file sizes), and incompatibility with organizational security standards and software.
This was an option with the Kryptiq Patient Portal but it is not an option with the GE Patient Online that we just moved to so it is a moot point for us.

Thanks everyone. I really appreciate your input. These are all valid reasons and also reasons we have taken into consideration. Currently it is on, but the attachments only go to one place and it is screened by one of our IT staff before it is accepted into the EMR, but with volume, it couldn't stay that way.
We do not currently allow attachments and I have only heard one complaint from a patient about it. It has been discussed once or twice. As far as Virus concerns go, attachments should be scanned with ClamAV as it was a required part of the SMPP installation for just that reason if I understand correctly.
