We are starting to put in Lab/ Radiology orders in GE. The current process is to enter them and then once they are signed a Test Form prints which is given to the patient to take to the appropriate dept. We were hoping to be able to set this to print to specific departments rather than relying on the patient to take to order over. After speaking with GE we are unable to do this as we can only set orders to print to one specific location (users default printer). We also asked GE if there was a way to route the orders to a desktop like we do with documents and were told no.
So we thought we would check here for a possible solution. Has anyone found a way to route orders to a desktop?
In C-EMR you can set the print destination by service provider. Depending upon your organizational structure you may be able to select a printer at Lab/Radiology is it's on your network and mapped to the users location. You could also set it to the Biscom Fax Printer and fax the orders the relevant service provider.
Good Morning Jessica,
you should be able to do this. If you go to print and click on printers for anything. You have an option to change what printer the Orders go to, so if you have a shared printer that goes to the specific department, you can change it there. now this is a per person and computer setting, so it would have to be changed for each person and computer that will need it that way. let me know if this helps.
I'm still learning but we do these things. For order printing, we have the set to drive from the order itself. In admin under codes - codes and categories - tests and proc. You can set the default printing at the parent level (you can also select the individual order ((chest x-ray 2 views)) and do the same but if you apply it to the parent level it will apply to all of those within the category) by selecting the category you want and setting the desired service provider. you can set this to multiple locations by location of care if applicable where one department prints and add another that faxes. You will need to hit change new or change then under change insurance specific order information hit new and select the sp you want then click the set preferred box. All check boxes must be absent in the options printers box for this to work. So if an order is selected from x-ray for a user home location of oncology, it will print if set.
As far as the other, we setup admin queue's for our orders. First setup a dummy user account for the specific location that has chart access and set to that specific location of care. next go to admin, chart, order defaults, referrals, and under the location of care, click change and change the order administrator to the user you set up prior. Any order that goes to admin hold will sort to this queue which the nurse can then monitor.
Hopefully this helps and I did not make a mess of this.
The work around we use is to route the document in which the lab orders were entered to a proxy desktop for the lab (Lab Orders, Clinic Name). With the documents on the desktop, the lab techs can see which patients to expect for lab tests. From there they can scroll through the document to see the orders or open the patient's chart and see the orders in the orders module.
The workflow is the provider will end and route the document to the appropriate lab desktop as well as route it to themselves so it is on both desktops.
We have looked at this. Unfortunately it will only let us set test orders to print to one printer. Ideally we would like to be able to print lab orders to lab and radiology orders to radiology, as they are in separate areas. Would the Biscom let us set it up so it will fax to each individual dept?
Do you know of a way to set it up to auto route? I don't know that our providers will remember to route the document or like the idea of taking the extra steps to do this.
You would set up two different service providers. One for lab and one for radiology. Each service provider would have the relevant information such as fax number for sending via Biscom. When you build out your order sets you can default a service provider for each category (ie Lab or Radiology).
No I do not know of way to auto route the document. We struggled with this when we first went live with lab orders. It seems like it should be a simple concept to route the actual order to a desktop but it can't be done.
We did get some push back on the workflow but in the end we decided this was the best workflow for our organization. We are, however, a smaller organization (10 providers) with 3 clinics and there is a lab on site at each clinic.
