We had a speaker earlier this week, talking about transgender patients. And this started follow-up discussions regarding - currently, GE classifies as: male, female, undetermined
And other areas such as GE Protocols, and prefixing for correspondence, and knowing actual body parts present. There are a host of issues that are beginning to come to light.
So... interested to know how GE may be planning to address. And, how other practices are handling. There are a couple of OBS Terms - "SEX" and "SEXATBIRTH" that may both be helpful, and possible starting points.
Please feel free to provide any and all thoughts...
Thanks.

We are going to be using obs terms to grab gender preference and sexual orientation. we are doing this through an electronic form using Visual Signature Capture. the patient fills it out on a tablet while waiting for their appointment, and then we can put the patient entered info into the chart banner, protocols, forms etc...
This is not quite live in our clinic yet, but that is our first attempt at a solution.
What OBS Terms will you be using?
GENDER IDEN for the Gender preference question, and SEXUAL ORIEN for the sexual orientation.
here are the options a patient can choose from:
Gender Identity- Male,Female,Transgender Male (Female to Male),Transgender Female (Male to Female),Other,Choose not to disclose
Sexual Orientation - Straight (not lesbian or gay),Lesbian or Gay,Bisexual,Something Else,Don't Know,Choose not to disclose
We currently use the Additional Hx tab of social history to enter information about SOGI. We use Visualutions CHC Registration (we are FQHCs) - Our current system doesn't have all the appropriate options, but they have a new CHC product to be released in Q3 I believe that contains the right ones.
