Curious to see what type of mics everyone uses for dragon?
Hi Ernie,
Our "Dragon Doc" likes to use the Nuance PowerMic II. He likes the ergonomics and mouse control functionality. It is a bit spendy (about $400) and I believe the warranty on it is only like 60 days. We've had to send it back numerous times for out of warranty "repair" because the solder where the usb cable meets the internal board has been prone to breaking.
Thanks,
Allen
We use Phillips Speech Mike, Plantronics Bluetooth headset, and a cheap microphone from Office Depot ($11). There are not too much issues, except with the bluetooth, it will sometimes disconnect.
We also use the Nuance Power Mic but we have not had any issues with repair. The docs like the custom features so that if they are building templates within Dragon they have hands on navigation by customizing the buttons.
We use the simple Andrea "anti-noise" NC-91. Not much to break with them, seem to work well for the providers.
We use the Philips Speech Mic and the Blue Parrot bluetooth headset.
Have tried the Nuance, but users tend to prefer the rollerball of the philips to the nub on the nuance.

We have been using the Philips microphones for years but recently started trying the Nuance PowerMic II. No matter which ones you get they seem to be unnecessairly expensive in my opinion. I think we pay $329 through our vendor
The reason for me wanting to get away from Philips is Windows 7. Since migrating to Win 7, Philips requires you to buy a new microphone if you have doctors who are hooked on using that on/off button. The newest Philips drivers explicitly do not work with the old hardware. They raised their prices as well so I may as well go with Nuance. I hope they don't break like some here have had happen though. That's a bummer. I can tell you the response time of hitting on/off is immediate in Dragon now as opposed to the Philips solution

We actually use one other headset too. It is a lot cheaper and seems to work well. About $50 for them but they are wired and end up getting tangled and don't last too long depending on the user. I swear I am going to find a strangled body in a room someday as bad as some of them have been torn up.
I also tried one of those bluetooth things which sits on your lapel on a lab coat and sort of works by sensing your vocal vibration from your throat. One doctor tried it, loved it for a while, then grew to hate it and never used it again.

We have about 7-8 providers that use dragon and they have all converted to and now swear by the nuance PowerMic II. Also I am in the middle of upgrading them all to Medical 11 and it seems to be much better than 10 (more accurate). None of them have failed. They range in age of ~2years old to a few months.
Before Nuance released the PowerMic II, Philips completely dominated the speech recognition handheld programmable mouse/microphone market. Philips answered Nuance's challenge a couple of years ago with the SpeechMike III but in our opinion, they were unable to challenge Nuance until the release of the Philips Premium SpeechMike LFH 3500 introduced additional programmable buttons, larger playback speaker, automatic mute (when you lay the microphone down on a flat surface), integrated pop filter, precision stainless steel laser scanned self lubricating removable trackball, improved signal-to-noise ratio, more sensitive completely redesigned extended-range jar proof microphone element, higher accuracy, polished surface (to reduce unwanted fingertip noises), motion sensor, ergonomically improved and most importantly… SIGNIFICANTLY IMPROVED noise filtering. This is the 1st handheld microphone that can effectively be used in a crowded Emergency Room. In my opinion, the greatest problem with other handheld microphones is noise filtering. Fortunately, Philips seems to have found a solution. The Philips LFH 3500 also comes with a one year warranty vs. Nuances 90 day warranty and can be used on MAC computers. There is also a significant price difference with the Speechmike priced at 335.00 and the Powermic at 424.00.
