Hello:
I have been trying to understand the law / CMS rule around medical assistants entering CPOE. Has anyone been able to verify that MAs can enter orders that will count toward MU Stage 2 CPOE measure?
Thanks.
It is my understanding that any Licensed/Certified health care professional can enter orders. If the state licenses or certifies MAs and yours are licensed/certified then they can enter them. You have to mark the user as licensed in the Users module/Admin for them to get counted in CQR.
Hi,
Our MA's that are ABR-OE certified have been given the Role of a licensed personnel (CMA, LPN, RN). Currently on 9.5 so the information of when they took the test and expiration date is temporarily entered under the Member Login field when adding a User. When we upgrade to 9.8 this weekend, I plan to move this information into the required fields. I believe that as long as you give them the privileges, keep track of their "certification" (only good for 2 years), and enter this information in the required fields it will count.
In addition, we received this reply from the Executive Director, Legal Counsel, of the American Association of Medical Assistants:
1. Medical Assistants who have been trained on the job, or have training/education in a health discipline other than medical assisiting, are permitted to apply for the ABR-OE if they meet all the requirements. They will receive the ABR if they pass the post-tests for the five on-line continuing education courses.
2. The ABR-OE does meet the CMS requirement of "credentialed medical assistant"
3. Providers must include written documentation of the applicant's proficiency in EHR order entry as described in teh AAMA requirements prior to testing.
Christine,
Thank you so much for your post. Until I found this, we were under the impression that we would either have to completely refine our workflow or get all of our MA's fully credentialed. You have saved us a lot of time, money, and headache! Paula
Does anyone know or have thoughts about the user settings for credentialed MA's of "state", "Effective", and "End Date" as potentially being required fields to meet this measure? According to one of our analysts, we were able to meet this measure with a test user with ONLY "Licensed or Credentialed" checked and no other information filled in. I have checked the CMS guidelines again and do not see anything stating this information is required. However, these fields are listed in the Set Up section of the GE User Guide. I am asking because if we do not need to include this information, then I will likely opt not to as I foresee it being an administrative nightmare to keep current. Appreciate your feedback and insights!
