We have recently worked to setup the Truven Patient Education to get credit in our CQR. Per GE/Athena's documentation and were unable to get this to work. Continued to get an error that it was unable to access the Shared Folder.
Per Athena, this location needed open access for everyone. We found this only worked on the JBoss server. They advised to allow this open access on the JBoss server or we could create another share on a new separate server.
After spinning up a new server, and creating a Truven folder that was completely open, we were able to get the Patient Education to work without any errors.
During testing, we then found that clicking the envelope button in Patient Education only marks the MUActivityLog, but does not actually send the document to the patient.
From the Guide:
Clicking the Envelope icon will record in the MUActivityLog with a delivery method of "Save to Chart", and that the clinic must complete the steps to actually send it to receive credit for this measure.
What workflows are others using to send this document to the patient to receive credit for the measure?
We currently have SMPP 8.xxxx and CEMR 9.12 along with GE Patient Online.
When you click on the envelope in Patient Education and click on the checkbox Record handout printing in Chart
It will save the long URL to Microdexsolutions.com and also attach the PDF to that document as a Pat Edu: document type.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you
GM
Hey GM - you have to complete additional setup steps in your patient portal. Handouts can only be transmitted to patients via the patient portal, not directly by e-mail. I attached the setup document we were given (link below). The process does indeed work! Good luck!

Jason - Thanks for the reply.
We are using CEMR 9.12 with GE Patient Online for our patient portal. I see the documentation is for CPS. Is portal included in CPS installs? If not, what patient portal are you using? These directions don't look familiar related to portal setup.
Thank you

Jason,
Looking at the document more, would you be able to provide the code for the Portal SM Advanced form to allow us to create the encounter?
Thank you
Garry Malcom
Ah, the patient portal we use with CPS is called ezAccess. I am not familiar with CEMR or GE Patient Online, so I imagine the portal setup for that is completely different.
That's explains some of my confusion. Would you be able to provide the code for the Encounter in the instructions: Portal SM Advanced form? This might provide us some direction on our part to see what we can do to make our own workflow.
Thanks again
Garry Malcom
I don't have the source code for that form. It was provided by the ezAccess portal vendor. However, the workflow for sending patient education doesn't require it. All we have to do in our practice is click the little e-mail icon on a Truven handout, and if the patient is enrolled in the portal, it automatically sends them a portal message with the handout (as a PDF file), and they get an e-mail telling them they have a secure portal message. The Portal SM Advanced Form is used when providers want to send the patient a portal message that they type up themselves.

Hello I was wondering if maybe someone can help me with a quick question please, in order for a handout/patient education to count for MU does a provider need to send the handout/patient education to the patients email before signing the office visit to get credit?
Sometimes providers forget to send the info while the progress note is open and they will go back and send it after it has been signed. I have heard something about having 3 days but i may be wrong or its possible the 3 days is just for new patients. Thank you in advance for you time.
