Hello All,
I am trying to think through a solution to calculate providers time for the new time based E&M option. There are a couple of examples of how to calculate time on the forum. What I am working through is a good way to make this unobtrusive to the provider. The issue is the provider doesn't necessarily complete their note in one sitting. They may put the visit on hold, another staff member may work in the visit and then route it back. The provider then may work on visits after hours if they are busy in the office. I need to calculate only the providers time in the chart.
Has anyone worked out a way to keep a running total without the docs having to click a button every time they open a chart?

Does this time need to be recorded in the EHR as a metric like an obs term, or are you looking more for a value for time-tracking to store elsewhere?
I'm no DBA, but I feel like perhaps you might be able to catch when a chart update is opened and closed per user in the database. The problem I would foresee is the potential for inaccuracy. Users may leave a chart update open while they are distracted by something else, for example.
