Good Morning!
In VFE, is there a way to program a function that will remove test orders that are already added to the orders module? My gut tells me no because I have searched both help in EMR and VFE, but I figured why not ask the experts? Any help would be appreciated!
Thank you!
No, Ge/Virence/Athena never built that functionality for orders.
Thank you.
To clarify, the reason there is no functionality to remove orders is related to medical documentation rules and regulations. Once an order is signed, it is a permanent part of the patient's chart, which by law, cannot be altered. In the paper days, the order would be 'cancelled' by another order. In the digital age, that spirit is continued via the 'remove' workflow.
Note that orders marked as 'complete' cannot be 'removed/cancelled' since the implication is that the order was successfully executed. This is a primary reason to carefully consider setting any order to complete automatically. While convenient, I personally do not like this setting for most orders due to the legal ramifications that accompany it.
Documentation in the chart noting that X order on Y date was added and completed in error is about the only recourse right now. I suppose one could create an order of 'Order Error' and include that in the orders module as well, but that could get confusing since it still cannot link to the original order.
What is needed is a method to file a completed order in error without having to trash the entire document. Something simple would suffice with legally vetted options to explain why it was marked complete and now being removed. This would also preserve the link to the original note authorizing the order.
We also need a method of archiving old orders marked complete, similar to obsterm archiving. That list simply grows much too large for daily activity to be very useful.
Any EMR/CPS customer up to the challenge of submitting those as an enhancement request for EMR/CPS 2019 since 'orders' is actively being revised in that version? 😉
Thank you Lee for responding on this one. I want to add that in our form we are using MEL_ADD_ORDER, but I was hoping that when I added an order as just in process that I could also clear that unsigned list in case there was a mistake instead of having to remove it from the orders module. I hope that made sense.
It does indeed. As long as it is in progress, then EMR/CPS 2019 is going to answer your need. They have added MEL_REMOVE_ORDER functionality as long as it is 'in progress'. The signed orders are still going to be an issue, especially with the existence of that check box called 'sign clinical lists' that folks like to keep checked...
