Hello,
I’ve had some clinicians request an interest in creating a custom option to the prescribing method section while adding new Rx’s. Their purpose is to build in an option called “provider dispensed” so they can specify when medication (not just the Rx) was provided to a patient to leave with. I know that a different option is the medication administration section and just building out the oral custom lists would achieve this as well in a way, but they want to use it for dispensing not administering.
A possible example: a patient is seen at one of our low barrier sites and is not likely to make it to a pharmacy to get their 7 day course of antibiotics due to mental health crisis and the clinician wants to insure the patient receives the medication. They would dispense 7 days of the Rx...
It hasn’t technically been administered because the patient didn’t take 7 days worth of medication in that visit.
I have found on the table that contains the 14 or so prescribing method options and inserted my new one (in a complete separate test environment) and see no changes to my options at that drop down... I imagine there is a crosswalk elsewhere in the database and a pass through that takes these descriptions and codes and inserts them in to the drop down for click and to select but I don’t know where that is.
Does anyone know how we could make this work? Or why we should NOT make this work? Or have alternative suggestions?
Any and all thoughts on this would be greatly appreciated!

There is an option of "Samples Given" that means basically the same thing. I think this is what we use whenever we provide the patients with the medication in house.
Thanks for your reply on this rwilliams! The samples given option is something that was discussed with the clinicians and could almost work if there were completely no other options.
Short from developing a new form to create an electronic MAR within a form, I'm still struggling to find a conclusive answer for this.
