How is everyone handling lab results via the portal? Are you posting them on the portal, using the ACM and utilizing the delay feature, sending the lab documents from the chart, or using secure messages to send results from the nurse? We are currently only sending a limited amount of labs on our clinical summary, but our patients are requesting more. Some providers feel they should get everything in real time, some feel that we should hold the results for a couple days. If we send the actual document, it will include the normal range, which will help the patients understand, but it could also create confusion if a value is abnormal, but is not important to a physician (such as some components of a CBC with diff). Just looking at what everyone else is doing.
We have ACM, but we don't use it for normals and probably won't. If the labs are normal (per the provider not the range), our staff will send a copy of the report on a case-by-case basis. In some cases, we already know which patients might question the report so we simply send a message stating the labs are normal. We've had the occasional question about the normal range, but it hasn't really caused any issues.
Do you think that you will change this process in light of Stage 2 requirements? We are trying to figure out how we will increase our patients use of the portal, and we thought that posting or sending the lab results would be of interest to our patients.
Our Portal is the GE Patient Online (POL) portal. We have it set with a delay of 96 hours from the time the lab report reaches the physician desktop and then the report is automatically posted to the Portal for the patient whether it has been signed or not.
We also have ACM but have not turned on the lab feature, I am wanting to get this going over the next month or so. There has been the debate over normal values vs. what the provider considers normal. The automated feature seems nice but if it creates more questions and work for the staff they would be better doing it manually? Looking for any and all opinions, we want to increase the functionality of the portal but not at the expense of extra work for the staff.
Thanks,
Steph B
Update on our process. We are now sending all labs with the exception of a few sensitive labs (STD testing, hepatitis testing, pregnancy testing) to the patient portal 72 hours after resulting via the ACM. So far so good. Our staff was afraid they would be inundated with phone calls from the patients, but that actually hasn't happened. The feedback from the patients has been good. We are also starting the process with imaging reports this week too.
Hi Malissa,
I realize this is an old post but I am hoping maybe you and others are still following it. We have GE Patient Online (POL) for our portal and have found reporting for Stage 2 through CQR to be problematic with several of the measures which rely on the portal and/or the PATIENTPORTALPIN. I can provide more specific information and questions if in fact someone is still monitoring this post. GE has not been able to provide any actual resolution to our issues, and it seems as if we are the only ones left on POL. Just looking for some fellow POL sites to collaborate with.
thanks
What type of issues are you having?
I am not in a technical role. So, my ability to speak to these issues is limited but I can give the broad imformation. What we have learned from GE is that there is currently no way to report through CQR utilizing POL. They claim to have an opportunity to test a possible interface solution but we have yet to see it. Apparently, another site was planned to test and did not follow through. We offered and are still waiting. Here are the issues which are all pretty much the same:
- Core Measure #7- POL report count is by all not by providers; PATIENTPORTALPIN is not used in POL which is what CQR requires in the MU Activity Log
- Core Measure #8- this will only count if it is printed; if the provider opts to send the CVS to the portal as we would like them to do, it will not count in CQR bc of POL
- Core Measure #17- PATIENTPORTALPIN is not used in POL
