Is anyone allowing patients to sign up for the patient portal and create an account through your facilities website? If so, any pros and cons to that?
You must have a way to securely authenticate the patient. You'll want someone well-versed in information security to be involved to ensure you don't open up an unintentional vulnerability.
We allow patients to create accounts on the portal directly from our website without and invite. We don't match them to CPS until we validate data. We have many patients find us, request appointment and fill out information before we ever talk to them. It is a great way to capture patients. One con is you may end up with patients on the portal who never become your patient- i.e. we don't take insurance, don't treat issue etc. We simply reject the data and never create an account in CPS. Until we match the patient, they have no access to patient PHI. It works very well for us.
hbias - which portal are you using?
We let patients request an account online but it still must be manually approved by staff.
