A word of caution regarding MMSE. It is a tool that has changed copyright ownership over the years and the new 'owners' do not play well with others.

As a reminder for all developers out there, two requests could land your practice in hot water:
1) Using copyrighted material in your system without first obtaining permission from the owner/author. Always research the copyright status of 'standardized' content before developing and/or deploying. When warranted, request written proof that permission from the author/owner has been obtained. The developer should not begin development until this proof is produced. This protects the practice and YOU from a potential lawsuit over IP.
2) Modifying copyrighted/protected material (even one word in some cases) will invalidate the tool in the eyes of 'certification agencies' (i.e. CMS). Rationale: Most surveys and questionnaires used in medical practice have undergone extensive research and study validation to the point that a seemingly benign alteration can result in adverse outcomes. PHQ-9 is one that comes to mind - a single word change invalidates the entire survey, according to the author's research. Always have any change 'certified' by the author/owner of the content and request written proof that it is permissible. This protects the practice (fiscally and malpractice), you, and the PATIENT.
