Can anyone share their methods for recording education completed/handouts given?
We currently use different options for accessing and documenting these types of information. In many cases, we record education within a form component that specifically addresses that disease (for example, how to use an inhaler on an asthma form or how to care for your feet on a diabetes form) and we've got a lot of the handout-printables available and documented on our CVS component.
I'd like to move the education and handout documentation into its own component since many of our providers do this right around the time when they're completing their impression and plan portion of the visit and we thought that documenting education in a centrally located component might be more useful/accessible to all contributors.
I have a patient instruction component with some education documentation (similar to the ccc version), but I'm actually thinking of building a more broad-reaching component specifically targeting education and handouts that includes a much wider variety of educational topics including general practice, specialty, mental and behavioral health information. The education documented could then be pulled into the care plan so as to document their PCMH chronic disease-specific topics addressed at the visit.
Is there anyone else working towards modularizing education? Anyone have a component built already? The thought of organizing the volume of clinical knowledge for educational purposes is daunting.
Thoughts?
What is your organization's plan for MU next year? If you plan to upgrade to CPS 12 (still due out before the end of this year I believe) I would wait and see what it has to offer. Patient education is becoming a core MU objective for stage 2 and it sounds like GE is doing some work to make it easier to document education for reporting purposes.
Yea, we are actually planning to move to CPS 12. We've looked at the overview for CPS 12 and saw the new "basic" content releases to address MU needs, though I didn't see anything particularly education-specific despite marketing in that direction. I'll go back and scan the CPS 12 info for education resources. I expect that I'll be doing a lot of changing regardless since we tend to do things custom in our shop, but design-wise, perhaps they'll have thought of some good ideas.
