Is there a way to "complete" an order using a "button" in an encounter form, instead of having to manually complete the order through the orders module or relying on the order completion popup? The desire is to complete the order in a single click through the form itself.
Obviously order completion can be handled through link logic using HL7, and the thought in our group is that the same function used in the HL7 should be able to be used as a function in the encounter form.
We're on 9.2 (Oracle). Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Im sorry to butt in on your post but my group is just thinking about implementing the order completion thru HL7. Do you know anything that can help me with this?
Hi there - Unfortunately I am not HL7 savvy. We have an interface group here who manages all that.
I can give you the name of our Interface Lead - she might be able to point you in the right direction in terms of LinkLogic manuals, HL7 specs etc... If interested, give me your email address and I'll send you her contact info. I know she and her team have attended David Erickson's sessions at CHUG and have found them very useful.
When you set up the category the Test or Service is under in Orders/Codes & Categories you can add a dummy Plan-specific Information and set the Disposition when Signed as Complete.
Thank you for replying but I am not clear as to how that would help us when we get the result in through an interface?
We are currently using In Process on all in-house labs and then when the results are entered in (manually), the nurse has to also go and complete the order. I wish there was a way to complete these with a button on the form or automatically when the result is entered. This doesn't seem possible through the forms unless you tied a button to shoot an HL7 message to LinkLogic; however, that is a very complicated solution.
We were allowing these orders to auto-complete, but with NCQA, we are required to track results on our in-house labs.
Sorry, misread the post. I don't think there is a way to do that with a form. I haven't seen anything in the MEL functions that deal with changing an order's status. When the HL7 result comes in and has the EMR order number in OBR-2, the order will be completed when the document is signed.
Are you wanting them to do a full append on the results and that's when they would load the form to complete the order?
2 things, I assume we would have to ensure the order number is sent out correctly to have it sent back to us correctly.
AND - when the order number comes back in in OBR-2, can we set this up to be autosigned , to save a step, if results are normal or does this preclude the autosign?
Yes, your service provider would somehow have to be notified of the order number generated by the EMR so they could put it in OBR-2. And keep in mind that if you order multiple labs, even though they are for the same service provider, each lab gets its own unique order number.
I believe if the document comes into the EMR as signed it would autocomplete the order. We have our labs come back as unsigned and the related order completes when the provider signs the document. You could set your LinkLogic task, assuming it was a lab result, to Automatically Sign and either route or not route. Abnormal you would have set to Do Not Sign - Route for signature.
There is not a way that we have found via a form, however, when labs and testing are scanned and indexed in, the indexer can complete the orders at this time. This will keep the nursing staff from having to complete the order. If this helps. Also, not sure what indexing software you are using, but when we index some things, we index using observation values.
It is set up in the indexing configuration and works great. If you'd like more information on this, I'd be glad to share. The software we use is the Kryptic Document Management.

That sounds great, I would love to hear about it!
Like David, we plan to use the OBR-2 segment to "complete" our orders. Our folks are still trying to decide if we should have LinkLogic auto sign the results on the way in - we'll likely decide NO. They should still be marked as complete during the process however.
We have Orchard for our labs so I have my labs set up to order in GE either thru a form or the orders module and have this as well . We have our orders set to auto complete thru Orchard on results that way we know for sure if the lab was indeed done or if the patient was a no show. Since we are a multi specialty clinic with satalite sites all results also go to the flow sheets.
