Hi everyone,
I am the IT manager for a clinic in Colorado; we have both GE and Orchard system. We are currently undergoing a project to be able to report on anything and everything from these two systems. I wanted to find out from CHUG group what has your clinic/hospital done in the recent years to be able to report across all data of either both systems, just GE or even across multiple different medians (Access, Excel, 3rd party software, etc.).
We are considering developing a data warehouse, centralizing all of our data types (Access, excel, Orchard, GE, SAS, etc.) and building from there.
It would be greatly appreciated if anyone can provide some insight on this type of a project and how it went for them.
1. Did you implement a data warehouse or did you just use SQL reporting
2. Are you using Crystal reports more then anything else
3. Did you create this in a virtual environment?
4. How many servers did you use?

1) We've never implemented a data warehouse here, but I won't say we never will. We have reporting servers we update monthly — it would be an easy step to start implementing warehousing on at least the SQL Server, if not so much for the Oracle snapshot.
2) We've historically used mostly Crystal, but all my recent CPS and EMR reports have been SQL Server Reporting Services 2008 R2. I'm not getting huge losses in functionality, and being able to actually search inside the reports to see which ones are looking at particular obs terms could be very useful at some point. Not to mention the ability to check diffs between versions when using Subversion — with CR's binary files, I'm stuck with saving the individual versions of the reports and spelunking to try to figure out what changed between versions.
3-4) I don't watch that side of things closely — I let IT worry about it.

Garrett,
Thanks for the reply, would you mind having a short discussion with me and my team on this matter. We are simply needing to bring to our MD some other case studies and you are one of only responses I have had so far.
I would assume it would take no more then a 10 min conversation over the phone. I can setup a WebEx if you like and send it your way.
If we can do this in the very near future that would be HUGLY helpfull.
Thanks!
